Toshiko Sekiguchi is a housewife who has been hit by the terrible loss of her husband following a heart attack. On the day of the funeral, the dead man’s cell phone rings and Toshiko answers it. From that moment on her life and convictions will change for ever. On the other end of the telephone is Akiko Ito, the husband’s lover and owner of a restaurant. Junji Sakamoto adapted the novel by Natsuo Kirino, which has the same title as the film, to tell a story of secrets and betrayals. Toshiko goes back over her life and comes to the conclusion that she was always faithful to her husband, while he not only had a relationship with another woman, but also helped finance her business. Through this specific tale, Junji Sakamoto paints a portrait of how Japanese society functions. He dissects it and demonstrates, as he himself says, that “making films is, in some ways, a criminal act, or at least sufficiently unhinged to cause guilt. I like to get my hands dirty, to put myself in the shoes of both the victim and the executioner”.
