Filipino cinema –with Khavn de la Cruz and Lav Diaz in the forefront– is one of the most restless coming from the East, a breeding ground for a generation of independent cinematographers who have found in digital tools the freedom to make the kind of films they wanted. Adolfo Alix Jr. is a prolific movie-maker who has won prizes at various international film festivals. In Tambolista he paints a street-level portrait of the city of Manila through the eyes of a boy who dreams of becoming a drummer. He won’t have much chance to pursue his calling when his surroundings look set to plunge him into the abyss, with his mother expecting another child and a brother who has got his girlfriend pregnant. Shot in black and white, with young actors, and following the path of his country’s cinéma verité, the film is made up of fragmented scenes succeeding each other to the rhythm of a subtle soundtrack created by Khavn de la Cruz. A raw drama about poverty, guilt and redemption.
