Yu Lik-wai, one of Chinese independent cinema’s leading directors of photography (he has been responsible, for example, for the photography of some of Jia Zhangke’s films), chose as the subject of his second movie the life of emigrants from the Republic of China to the new “administrative region” of Hong Kong. Seen as the paradise of capitalism for the emigrants arriving there, the reality they find is the source of many disappointments. Upon his arrival in Hong Kong, the protagonist of this film meets three other emigrants who join the new urban underclass, working in the sex industry or in casual jobs. The Chinese star Tony Leung Kai Fai, who also produced the movie, reserved a part for himself in this film which, in spite of the harshness of the plot, is a portrait full of humour and warmth of human relations in a context of social change, without falling into social or political clichés.
