South Korea - 2008 - 35 mm, 101 min.
Crush and Blush is a black anti-romantic comedy of vengeance and obsession. The film marks the debut of Lee Kyoung-mi and is produced by renowned director Park Chan-wook, who also makes a cameo, along with Bong Joon-ho (The Host). The plot itself is complicated and unpredictable. Me-sook is the least popular teacher at her school. Akward and dowdy, with a bright red complexion and a foul temper, she spends most of her time complaining, and stalking married male colleague Seo. When hot young teacher Yuri steals both her class and her man, she decides to take action. Lighting up the screen with her spunky, idiosyncratic charm, Me-sook turns a comically tragic black-sheep misanthrope into an unlikely audience-favorite heroine. The script is wonderfully intelligent and witty, with eccentrically sense of humour that recalls the works of Wes Anderson. A truly unique film, Crush and Blush is easily the best Korean comedy of recent years. Darkly amusing though deeply humanistic, and anchored by an actress at the top of her game, it makes for required viewing.
