He graduated from Beijing University in 1992 and has written several screenplays, including those of All The Way (2001), directed by Shi Runjiu, and Spicy Love Soup, directed by Zhang Yang (1999), together with Cai Shangjun (The Red Awn). He made his debut as a director with Uniform, a film shot on a shoestring budget with non-professional actors that won prizes at the Rotterdam and Vancouver film festivals as well as being the only movie selected by the MOMA in New York for its programme in 2004.
